An ASCII Aquarium Has Swimming Fish That Display the Temperature—and Ghosts for Halloween

A maker created an ASCII-style aquarium for a smart-home display. Fish made from characters swim across the screen, including one that shows a live sensor temperature. Home Assistant can trigger falling food that the fish chase, and users can adjust fish count and swimming speed. A Halloween mode replaces fish with pumpkins, ghosts, and other spooky icons, and a scare effect displays an image and plays a sound. The panel can also show a voice assistant's state.

A Knock-Activated Monster Box with a Randomized Lid

Knock on the Mini Monster Box and a little monster peeks out. The lid opens and closes at random speeds and stays open for varying lengths of time.

Electronics maker Øyvind Nydal Dahl built it for his young daughter. A microphone detects the knock, while an Arduino and servo motor move the lid.

The same knock gets a different response. A little randomness gives a box a personality.

An AI-Powered Halloween Skull Tells Costume-Specific Dad Jokes

A Halloween skull uses a camera to spot people in costumes, then generates a dad joke tailored to what they are wearing. It sends the camera image to Claude and reads the generated joke aloud using text-to-speech.

Liz Clark of Adafruit published the build guide in 2025. The project is intended to entertain costumed guests at a Halloween party.

ファニトロちゃん:楽しい笑い

Approach a spooky skull and, instead of scaring you, it tells a dad joke. That's one unusually cheerful Halloween monster.
