A Pomodoro Timer Pops Up a Thumbs-Up Figure After 25 Minutes of Work

The Brass Thumb Pomodoro is a steampunk-style desk timer that rewards a completed 25-minute work session by popping a thumbs-up figure out of its case. A side switch selects work or rest mode, with five-minute breaks between sessions.

Maker Krzysztof Jamroz built the USB-powered device with Arduino electronics and 3D-printed parts. Assembly instructions and code are available on GitHub.

Finish 25 minutes of work and a mechanical thumb pops up to congratulate you. At least one thing on your desk is guaranteed to appreciate your effort.

This Pomodoro Timer Cries Until You Pick It Up and Gently Rock It with Both Hands

Rock-a-Pomo is a Pomodoro timer that starts crying when a work session ends and will not begin the break until the user picks it up with both hands and gently rocks it. A few seconds of appropriately gentle, rhythmic motion gradually fills a soothing meter; once the robot is calm and smiling, the break timer begins.

A single hard shake does not work, and rocking it too violently does not increase the meter either. The enclosure is deliberately large enough to encourage two-handed use so the user has to let go of the keyboard and mouse. It was created by nabekura.

Instead of making a break reminder louder or harder to dismiss, it adds a new task: soothe a crying robot. Taking a break now begins with a tiny piece of simulated childcare.
