A giant rotating ring displays scrolling text using black and white marbles as pixels. Radial channels around the ring each hold seven marbles to form a vertical column of the display. Once a column has passed, its marbles roll back down to be reused for the next characters.
Creator Ivan Miranda built the mechanism with just three motors to rotate the ring, select the marble colors and feed the marbles into the channels.
To make text scroll, the pixels themselves have to roll around a giant wheel. The display is doing almost as much moving as the message.
The 'Dad Jokes of the Day' template displays a different short joke once a day on an e-paper display. Its collection currently contains 100 jokes, mostly puns and wordplay about everyday life, history, science, mathematics, animals, and more. The creator may add more jokes in the future.
A display that refreshes daily just to deliver another dad joke. A wonderfully low-stakes use of e-paper.
A digital clock displays numbers by using air pressure to deform silicone membranes. Removing air from a 3D-printed segment creates a visible line, and multiple segments form digits. Valves control the display, which can update once per second.
The creator, the YouTube channel soiboi soft, built the air-powered display to retain its state through air pressure. It can also show timers and stopwatch readings.
Instead of simply lighting up a digit, this clock pumps air to reshape silicone. Every passing second calls for a little pneumatic construction job.
Wormhole Display is an app that turns discontinued Meta Portal devices into wireless displays and speakers for Macs, iPhones and iPads. Once installed, a Portal appears as an AirPlay-compatible receiver and can be used for screen mirroring or as an extended Mac display, with audio through its built-in speakers.
Portal devices are Android-based, so the app is installed as an APK after enabling ADB. The project has been tested on Portal+, Portal Mini, Portal Go and Portal TV, and requires no special software on the sending Apple device. It was released by Piotr Godlewski.
Remove the abandoned service from a dedicated appliance and what remains is a surprisingly useful screen and speaker. The Portal may have become more versatile after its original job ended.
